Registered Japanese Language Teacher Training Program

Registered Japanese Language Teacher Training Program

Starting with students entering in the 2026 academic year, we have launched a program designed to prepare students for the national qualification of registered Japanese language teachers.

What is a registered Japanese language teacher?

In May 2023, the "Act on the Accreditation of Japanese Language Education Institutions for the Proper and Reliable Implementation of Japanese Language Education" was enacted and came into effect in April 2024. This law established a new national qualification for Japanese language teachers, "Registered Japanese Language Teacher," making it a necessary qualification to teach at accredited Japanese language education institutions.

To obtain a registered Japanese language teacher qualification

To become a registered Japanese language teacher, you must pass the Japanese Language Teacher Examination (consisting of a basic and an advanced examination) and complete practical training conducted by a registered practical training institution. However, those who have completed a training course conducted by an institution registered with the Minister of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a registered Japanese language teacher training institution are exempt from the basic examination of the Japanese Language Teacher Examination.
Students who have acquired all the required credits in our university's curriculum are exempt from the basic examination of the Registered Japanese Language Teacher Examination and can obtain the national qualification of "Registered Japanese Language Teacher" by passing only the applied examination.

Overview and features of our university's registered Japanese language teacher training program

With the advancement of globalization, the need for Japanese language education in society is increasing year by year. The "Registered Japanese Language Teacher Training Program" is a program to obtain the national qualification of "Registered Japanese Language Teacher," which is necessary when teaching Japanese to non-native Japanese speakers at a Japanese language school (accredited Japanese language education institution).
This program is registered with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology as a "Registered Japanese Language Teacher Training Institution" and a "Registered Practical Training Institution," and provides systematic learning based on the "Registered Japanese Language Teacher Practical Training and Training Core Curriculum." It allows students to acquire a balanced set of knowledge and skills necessary for Japanese language teachers, including not only knowledge of Japanese language education and linguistics, but also multicultural coexistence, intercultural communication, educational psychology, and information literacy.
Furthermore, our university offers interdisciplinary learning through three areas: Psychological Services (Psychology), Global Studies (Language), and Media Science (Information). We aim to cultivate Japanese language teachers with the expertise to respond to an increasingly globalized and diverse society, and international human resources with a global perspective.
