Student Activities / Student Collaboration Circle LIKE

The student collaborative circle LIKE is a circle that cooperates with librarians to manage university libraries, including promoting reading, with the aim of making libraries more user-friendly and easier to use for university students, who are the main users of university libraries. The name combines the English words for "library" and "work," and includes the hope that users will come to like books.

Until 2019, we were a club for experiencing the work of a librarian, and our main activities were counter work experience, but since 2020, due to the impact of COVID-19, we have been unable to provide traditional work experience. Therefore, we have taken this opportunity to review our activities and restart as a new "student collaboration club."

LIKE's activities are diverse, and they are constantly exploring new initiatives, such as holding online reading groups that make use of the experience gained from distance lectures, creating promotional videos for the library, creating original goods (book covers, bookmarks) using LIKE characters, book hunting to select books that should be included in the university library from a student's perspective, and creating a free paper to convey the appeal of libraries and reading.

FY2020 Activities

Starting in 2020, the club began operating as a "student collaboration" club. Traditional work experience was kept to a minimum, and various plans and operations were carried out as online activities to promote reading. Each plan began with coming up with an idea, and involved experiencing the entire work process, including writing a proposal and publicizing the plan to students, with the aim of allowing students to make use of this experience even after graduation. Students commented that by turning their own ideas into reality, it was a good experience for them to understand how to proceed with a plan, and that they also gained a sense of accomplishment by realizing the plan, making it a more practical internship.

April to May Due to the spread of COVID-19, the library has been forced to close, and LIKE activities will also be suspended for a while.
June Starting with limited opening (for students and faculty), we explored ways to carry out LIKE activities online; one student suggested an idea for an "online reading group," and we began planning it together with the librarian.
July With university classes moving online, students who could no longer even casually chat with friends planned and held "online reading groups" as a place to communicate through books.
August In order to encourage people who do not normally use the library to visit, we offer "Gogaku Cinema," where people can watch films in various languages as part of their language learning.
september LIKE students participated in the 25th Biblibattle IN Shioyama, held at Koshu City Shioyama Library.
november Preparation and display of the special exhibition "Advent Book Calendar."
december Held an exchange of opinions with Yamanashi City Library and reported on LIKE activities. Students participated in the Yamanashi reading activity promotion project "Bibliobattle Yamanashi 2020".
January We prepared and implemented the "Lucky Bags of Books" exhibition, where we packaged several books selected according to a theme so that the contents could not be seen, allowing people to enjoy discovering books in new fields. As a circle collaboration exhibition, we prepared and implemented an exhibition about the culture of Japanese clothing, etc., in conjunction with the Japanese clothing club "Yui" to coincide with the New Year.
March In order to contribute to the promotion of reading activities in the prefecture, we held an online reading group by inviting librarians from public libraries in the prefecture. As part of a collaborative project, we prepared and held "LIKE BOOK," an exhibition of books recommended by LIKE students to junior and senior high school students at Yamanashi City Library.
